Based on analysis of 16,392 base pairs encompassing the complete open reading frames (ORFs) 1, 5, 31, 36, 37, 47, 60, 62, 67, and 68 of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) genome VZV genotype M1 was found in swab samples originating from 8 Tanzanian zoster patients. Moreover, sequence analysis suggests recombination events between different VZV genotypes within the ORFs 1, 31, 60 and 67.
